Both of these requirements are needed to receive VA Disability Benefits:

The veteran must have a current illness or injury (condition), which can include a mental condition, and
The veteran served in the Armed Forces in active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training.

Examples of proof of injury or causation during service that give rise to VA Disability Compensation:

Sustained an injury during service, such as from a fall during training.
Experiencing PTSD, depression, anxiety, or another mental health condition due to experiences of service.
A disease or condition that is linked to exposure to toxic substances during service. For example, cancer caused by exposure to contaminated water.
A condition or illness caused by a condition that VA has determined is service-connected. Secondary service connection can be granted for the secondary condition. For example, sleep apnea caused by service-connected PTSD and depression.
In proving these connections, presumptions may be available, such that service connection is granted based on service in a particular geography.
